What is MMMap?

MMMap(Mobility Management Map) provides an interactive map service to visualize mobility management configuration parameters used by global carriers.

(MMMap in the World as of Oct 28, 2018)

Background on mobility management
Mobility support is a prominent feature of cellular networks. It is achieved through the handoff scheme, which switches the user device’s serving cell tower from one to another as the user roams. Carriers manage handoffs in policies. That is, they follow the standardized mechanism (e.g., measurement-then-decision) and customize handoffs by configuring a number of parameters. These configuration parameters cover all the handoff steps such as, when and what to measure, whether to trigger a measurement reporting, what to report, which cell to select, and so on. Clearly, they are essential for us to understand how and why handoffs are performed in the wild, and shed light on diagnosing and improving mobility support.

MMMap and MMLab (MI-LAB)
We develop MMLab, a device-centric approach to collecting and measuring handoff configurations in the wild. It crawls handoff configurations from the signaling messages received at the mobile devices, thus enabling handoff configuration collection via smart phones only. We run MMLab as one task in our MI-LAB experimentation testbed and leverage crowdsourcing to collect handoff configuration traces from global mobile carriers with the help of volunteering participators. MMMap offers a user-friendly way to release this handoff configuration dataset to the public.

Key Features of MMMap

  • Locating the cells in the area of user interests
  • Offering per-cell handoff configuration view

Large and growing dataset

  • Enabling a complete cycle of data collection, analysis and visualization, along with MMLab
  • Allowing data collectors to see and check what they have contributed to recently in a live view

Live data cycle

  • Enabling a complete cycle of data collection, analysis and visualization, along with MMLab
  • Allowing data collectors to see and check what they have contributed to recently in a live view

Statistics and friendly visualization

  • Seizing what you care with view filters on carriers, radio access technologies, handoff types, time periods, etc.
  • Providing spatial/temporal statistics in an area or of customized subset

Open community at our hands

  • Open experiments (welcome anyone to join and contribute)
  • Open dataset to non-profit organizations and individuals
